Definitely white boards (as opposed to large paper boards). Large tables, some small tables too. Partitions, to separate the craziness groups can bring in, but not so much that it makes the openness of the room disappear.

We’ve been hearing this a lot actually—openness, but not too much openness. Anyone care to elaborate?

The 3rd and 4th floors have a closed atmosphere about them. The group floors should retain a public and open atmosphere. Also, more bean-bags!!

Shape:
I like the big tables currently in place because it is possible to spread my material around me. Helps me think. Much better than the smaller ones and especially the round ones, where my elbows have a lot of room, but paper seem to keep falling off, there is no room in the middle, and my knees bud with those of others.

Size:
Please, please, please consider adding tables and chairs that are suited for taller students too!! :) ... Given how much time we spend sitting, this will be really appreciated.

The desks that look over the ground floor should be replaced with some larger more comfortable chairs with the folding desktops (like some of the lecture hall chairs have). They could be in clusters of two or three facing the big window for a more relaxed discussion-based atmosphere while still allowing for people to have a place to sit and do studying.

For commuter students such as myself who do not have a dorm room on campus, it can be hard to find a good place to relax while taking a break from studying. I would love to have some more reclining chairs or couches with big pillows around to take some power naps while at the Library.

Lots of work space (large tables), comfortable (but not plush armchairs) work chairs, NONE of the coffe house atmosphere layouts (armchairs around a coffee table), white boards on the dividers, carpeting (or acoustic paneling) to reduce the echoing noises. The library is not for napping. If you want to nap, you can go to the music listening room or the flag building or somewhere like that; don't make the 2nd floor a challenge for people who actually want to do work in the library.

I encourage reuse of the existing furniture when possible. If existing furniture doesn't serve the purpose of the 2nd floor west anymore then it can be used elsewhere or you can have a fire sale for the students :)

I encourage you to find environmentally sensitive/sustainable products when sourcing new stuff. The whiteboards are a great idea, just have to be sure to have the white board markers always on hand so people dont mess them up with other markers.
